Humility: the missing component to success

Woodworking, much like life itself, presents a labyrinth of techniques and tools that can overwhelm even the most seasoned craftsmen, let alone newcomers. The temptation to impress others with our knowledge often eclipses the humility needed to embrace the learning curve fully.

But here's the truth: Every woodworker, regardless of experience, grapples with doubt and uncertainty. We all seek validation while fearing judgment for our perceived inadequacies.

Yet within this struggle lies a profound beauty—a beauty born not from flawlessness, but from imperfection. Like the grain of a rough-hewn board, our mistakes and missteps tell a story of growth and resilience. Each setback becomes a lesson learned, each error a chance to refine our craft.

So, let us embark on this journey together, armed not with bravado but with humility and a thirst for knowledge. Let us embrace the unknown, knowing that true mastery lies not in the destination but in the process itself. As we navigate the twists and turns of this path, let us find solace in our shared humanity and draw strength from our collective experiences. For in the end, it is not the perfection of our finished pieces that defines us, but the love and passion with which we approach our craft.

And if we can hold onto that love, then perhaps, we can navigate the wilderness of woodworking and emerge stronger, wiser, and more inspired than ever before.

As my first blog post, I feel it necessary before all else to impart to you the necessary encouragement to keep going. Keep going even if you feel like you’ve failed. Keep going despite your disappointment, despite feeling overwhelmed and not good enough. Keep going and soon enough, without realizing it, you will be all that you aspire to be.
